2 Killed in Auto/Train Accident

      (Cameron)   Two People were killed in an auto/train accident here in Cameron Sunday evening. The accident happened in the 400 block of Houston street near Milam Grain, however, the pickup was pushed for almost a half mile before tumbling off the tracks at the East First Street crossing.  Pronounced dead at the scene was the driver, 27 year old Adolfo Camacho Gutierrez  of Cameron, and his passenger 37 year old Albert Gomez of Rockdale.  Both men were killed instantly.  The accident happened shortly after 6 pm.  The southbound BNSF train, loaded with coal, finally came to a stop just short of the Adams Street crossing.  Debris was scattered from the point of impact to the final resting place of the pickup.    In addition, crossing gates at Gillis were damaged as the train and pickup passed thru.  Both men were pronounced dead at 6:35 pm by Justice of the Peace Chip Dunsmore.  Their bodies were taken to Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron.

Sunday's wreck was the second auto/train fatality of the year.   A Carrolton teenager was killed in a car/train accident on May 12th near Pettibone.  Sunday's wreck was also the 3rd multiple fatality wreck here in the county this year,  bringing this year's death toll to 12.  Since 1994, the county has averaged only 9 fatalities per year.
