Political Heat

(Cameron)  Political debates broke out Thursday night as some 200 people gathered at the Cameron VFW for the VFWnsored Milam County candidate forum.  In two of the hottest Milam County races in recent history, candidates for the District Judge and Milam County District Attorney were challenged by their opponents and the audience for their platforms and past performances.  Candidates involved in contested races in the March Primary presented their platforms during the forum.   Candidates attending were Incumbent District Judge Charles Lance and his challenger Ed Magre.  Incumbent Milam County District Attorney Hollis Lewis and his Democratic opponent Kerry Spears, as well as Republican challenger Rique Bobbitt.  Candidates for Milam County Commissioner Precinct One Clifford Whiteley, John Klecka, Linda Terry Meyer, and Sonny Warrick.  And incumbent Precinct One Constable Tommy Chamberlain and his opponent Robert McCall.

In the District Judge's Race, challenger Ed Magre (right) said local support is a key to his campaign. (Magre statement)  Lance (left) has received several thousand dollars in campaign contributions from attorneys whom he called friends.  (Lance statement)

In the Milam County District Attorney's race, challenger Kerry Spears said she was encouraged to run by the people who said it was time for a change.  (Spears statement)  Incumbent Hollis Lewis' reprimand  from the State Bar was another reason she chose to run.  (Spears statement)  Lewis said he stood tall for the County and the State in the related case, and accepted the reprimand to keep harmony in the county.  (Lewis statement)
