4th Milam County Auto/Train Wreck of 2000 Leaves Cameron Man Critical

(Cameron)  A Cameron teen was upgraded to serious condition Thursday following a car/train accident 1 mile east of Buckholts Wednesday at the county road 205 crossing.  Mathew Lee Davis, 18, a 2000 graduate of Yoe High School, had exited Highway 36 onto CR 205 when his 2000 Saturn was struck broadside in the passenger side by an eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe Train.  The coupler of the front engine ripped through the passenger door pushing the car some 300 yards before the train came to a stop.  Davis suffered internal injuries and was airlifted by Medivac to Scott & White in Temple in critical condition.  He was upgraded late Wednesday to serious, but remains in guarded condition at Scott & White's ICU.  According to investigating State Trooper Michael Nix, the accident happened around 10:30 a.m.  The Conductor told Trooper Nix that Davis looked left, then proceeded across the tracks.  The crossing is not equipped with cross arms or flashing lights.  Nix said because the car radio volume was turned up, it is unlikely Davis could have heard the train.  The 3-engine train, with no other cars attached, was traveling about 50 miles per hour when the collision occurred.   The Cameron Fire Rescue Unit and Scott & White EMS responded along with Milam County Deputy Greg Kouba.  Wednesday's accident was the 4th auto/train accident this year here in Milam County.  Two of the wrecks resulted in 3 fatalities.  (See Story)
