(Cameron) 4 days after closing the books on the
worst year ever for Milam County traffic deaths, a husband and wife were killed in a
wreck today on the treacherous stretch of Highway 36 West of Cameron.
Pronounced dead at the scene was the driver of a 94 Dodge car, Sharon Kaye
Morgan 43 of Cameron, and her husband Charles Ray Morgan, 45.
According to investigating trooper Ernest Del Bosque, the Morgans
were westbound on Highway 36, and had slowed to turn left on County Road
215, when their car was
slammed from the rear by an 96 Kenworth Truck-Tractor (pictured
below). The driver, Curtis Grady Johnson of Temple, said he did not
see the Morgan's left turn signal. The collision knocked the
Morgan's Dodge into the eastbound bar ditch (shown above), where it was
struck again by a 96 Chevy Pickup driven (pictured right) by John Channing,
30 of Cameron. Channing, who was eastbound, told troopers he veered
into the bar ditch to avoid a head on collision with
the 18 wheeler. An eye witness to the accident told KMIL News at the
scene that Mr. Morgan was thrown from the small dodge in the initial
collision, and was struck by the oncoming pickup. Both
Sharon and Charles Morgan were pronounced dead at the scene by Precinct 1
Justice of the Peace Chip Dunsmore. Channing was
taken to Central Texas Hospital where he was treated and
released. Trooper Del Bosque placed the time of the wreck at
11:55 a.m. Del Bosque was assisted in the investigation by Trooper
Michael Nix, Trooper Joe Hadley of Temple,
the Milam County Sheriff's Department and Cameron Police. Also
responding were the Cameron Volunteer Fire Department and Scott &
White EMS out of Cameron.
During 2000, 24 people were killed on Milam County
roadways. 13 of those died in accidents on Highway 36 between
Cameron and the Bell County line. (See top
