Heavy Load Shuts Down FM 485 in Robertson County

(Robertson County)  Traffic through Robertson and Milam counties has been affected on Farm to Market Road 485 due to this huge obstacle.   A 1 million pound gas turbine generator was dumped on FM 485 when its carrier overturned late Friday.  A worker for Tex-Con, the company contracted to remove the generator, was killed Sunday afternoon when struck by lightning.  Curtis Lee Garner, 47 of Bryan died around 4:15 p.m. Sunday, 2 hours after lightening struck while Garner was walking some 100 yards from the generator.  Two others were hurt by the lightning strike.  Kerry Dennis Smith, 40 of College Station and an employee of Tex-Con, and William Necessary, 46 of China Spring, a supervisor for the Highway Department, were also taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Bryan.   (These pictures were taken by KMIL's Rob Reed just minutes before the lightning strike)

Detours have been established by the Highway Department to avoid the site.  Motorists traveling FM 485 from Milam County are being detoured down FM 979. Motorists from Hearne are being detoured down FM 1644.  One lane of traffic is also being routed through the east bound bar ditch around the generator.  Bob Colwell of the Texas Department of Transportation told KMIL News Sunday that it could take crews 3 to 4 more days to remove the generator.
