Dewberry Capital Celebrates Fruit With Festival

(CAMERON)  The 2002 Cameron Dewberry Festival was a big hit Saturday as thousands lined the streets of downtown, and visited the extended festivities at Wilson Ledbetter Park.  The Festival.  An antique show and sale was also held at the Williams Civic Center, while a BBQ cook-off was held in Wilson Ledbetter Park, where a record 56 teams participated in the event, organized by Patsy Gaines. 

In the horseshoe tournament, Roy Eakins of Manchaca and Buddy Knopp of Manor took 1st, Alex and Dido Ramirez of Belton took 2nd and finishing 3rd was John and Vierlene Straley of Rockdale.  The horseshoe tournament was organized by Lois Railey.

In the quilt show, chaired by Connie Anderle, Joyce Vaculin, of Cameron won a $50 cash prize for the best “Old” quilt.  Nancy Hoff, also won a $50 prize for best new quilt.  And a quilt raffle held Saturday also raised more than 200 dollars for the Milam County Courthouse restoration.

And finally, in the dewberry cake and cobbler competition, organized by Mary Frances Shipp, winners were announced.  In the layer cake division, 1st place went to Mary Matlock, with Faye Ellison finishing 2nd and Carolyn Dorner was 3rd.  In the bundt cake division, Lynn Chaplin was 1st, Carolyn Baker was 2nd and John Hardy was 3rd.  In the cobbler cake division, Wilma Dycus was 1st, 2nd place went to Richard Dodd and Carolyn Dorner took 3rd.  In Pastry Cobbler, Francie Denio won 1st, Richard Dodd was 2nd and Amy Kaase (Kossey) finished 3rd.  Celebrity auctioneer, Jimmy Morgan auctioned off the winners, and raised $1,345 for the Cameron Volunteer Fire Department.

Pappa's shoulders were a popular perch for young parade-watchers.

The new addition of a gazeebo to the downtown square provided a shaded rest area for downtown visitors.

Wilson Ledbetter Park hosted the "Kid's Fish" sponsored by the Game Wardens of Texas.  Organizers said the turnout was tremendous.

Barbecue Chefs found shaded refuge under the large oak trees at Wilson Ledbetter Park.  A record 56 entries competed in this year's cook-off.
