Bryan Man Killed in Train Accident

(CAMERON)  A 37 year old Bryan man was killed in an auto/train accident this afternoon West of Cameron at the CR 206 intersection.  His name is being withheld late Monday  pending notification of next of kin.  The accident happened shortly before 1 p.m. when the man, driving a large dump truck owned by Tex Trans of College Station, turned off US 190 onto CR 206 and was struck by the eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe coal train.  The cab was ripped from the trailer and knocked some 50 feet from the intersection.

Monday's fatality is the 4th for Milam County in 2002.  It is also the 2nd train fatality at the CR 206 crossing in less than two years.   In May of 2000, Ashley Bass was killed when she and her mother attempted to cross the tracks.

A Memorial has been placed near the CR 206 crossing where Ashley Bass was killed on May 12, 2000.

Bass, 14 of Carrolton, was a passenger in a 1995 Chevy Lumina driven by her mother Diana Pruitt Bass.  Ms. Bass was seriously hurt in the wreck but has since recovered.

Stop signs at the RR crossing have recently gone up, as railroad officials prepare to install crossing arms at the CR 206 intersection.

The Conductor of the BNSF train said today the collision knocked open the doors of the train's engine and caused damage to the front of the train.  In conversation at the scene, the Conductor said he has been involved in train/car accidents before, but nothing compared to the collision he experienced today.

The trailer of the large rig was separated from the cab following the collision.

Parts of the large rig were carried more than 100 yards from the crossing.

(Above & below)  The cab of the truck was destroyed by the collision.  The driver was ejected.

The BNSF train sustained front end damage in the collision.
