(ROCKDALE)
A pile of ashes and rubble are all that's left of two downtown Rockdale
businesses after a fire broke out early today. Arledge Antiques and
Ballard Carpet were destroyed in the blaze, however firewalls protected
adjacent businesses from structure damage. Citizens National Bank
and Southwest Milam Water Supply sustained smoke damage but were spared
from fire damage by the double-layered brick firewalls. Firemen
believed the fire started in Arledge Antiques that spread to Ballard
Carpet. There was no firewall between the two businesses which
originally housed E.M. Peebles & Sons Hardware store.
Fireman Mike Korenek told KMIL News at the scene
today that firemen were toned out shortly before 6 a.m. and were able to
penetrate about 20 feet inside Arledge Antiques before the roof began to
collapse. Firemen pulled back and contained the blaze between the
two firewalls. About 25 Rockdale Firefighters responded along with
Fire Units from Alcoa and Cameron. No one was hurt in the
fire.
Firemen spent most of the morning battling the
fire. Clean-up began late morning and will continue for several
days.
