Weather Causes Fatal Accident on Long Bridge

(CAMERON)  The name of a person killed in a weather related accident Tuesday evening on Little River Bridge was released late Wednesday.  Sotheavy Chhor, 41 of Spring was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Melanie Reed.  The accident happened around 6 p.m. Tuesday about 150 yards from the east end of the long bridge.  Ms. Chhor was a passenger in a 2000 Toyota Camry driven by Daravisoth Dam, 38 of Spring, Texas.  According to Trooper Jimmy Morgan, Dam entered the bridge from the east side traveling west, and lost control.  Dam’s car struck the north side guard rail and slid across the ice-covered bridge sideways, into the path of a Mac Truck driven by Bryan Anthony Manuel of Seabrook, Texas.  The truck hit the car broadside in the passenger door.    Dam suffered a broken wrist and other minor injuries, and was treated at Scott & White Hospital in Temple.  Both Dam and Chhor were wearing seat belts.

The couple involved in the accident were originally from Cambodia, and were the managers of a new business in Cameron.  Top Donuts was scheduled to open Wednesday morning at 4th and Crockett here in Cameron.  However, due to the accident, owners of the business told KMIL said the business opening will be delayed till sometime next week.

The accident happened Tuesday evening as a light mist continued to fall, contributing to a thick layer of ice on the bridge.  The long bridge was the scene of 5 accidents since the inclement weather set in Monday night.  No one was hurt in any of the other wrecks.   The bridge was shut down to traffic in both directions for several hours Tuesday while the investigation continued and the wreck was cleared.

An ambulance that carried Dam to Scott & White Tuesday evening, was involved in an accident while returning to Cameron.  Neither the driver, Lawrence Grigg, 26, nor his passenger, Jennifer Smith, 25, both of Calvert, were injured.  The ambulance was eastbound on US 190 when it struck ice on the pavement and plummeted about 30 feet into a ravine near the Milam/Bell County line.  The ambulance was left at the location overnight, and pulled from the ravine Wednesday.
