Soldier Killed in Motorcycle Accident

(CAMERON)  A 20 year old man, stationed at Witchata Falls in the Air Force became Milam County's 6th traffic fatality of the year early Thursday.  Derick Dunaway was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice  of the Peace Melanie Reed after his motorcycle crossed the center stripe and hit a Ford Bronco II head on.  The driver of the Bronco, Steve Mayer, 45 of Cameron, was transported to Scott & White Hospital in Temple by STAT-Air.  According to investigating Trooper David Yarbrough, Mayer was northbound on Hwy 77 at Walkers Creek north of Cameron, and Dunaway was southbound when he crossed the center stripe, striking the Bronco head on in the north bound lane.  The impact hurled the motorcycle some 100 feet in the opposite direction.  The accident happened around 4:30 a.m. Thursday.  Traffic was blocked in both directions for more than 2 1/2 hours while the wreck was investigated.  Cameron Fire and Scott & White EMS also responded to the scene.

Dunaway was en route to his girlfriend's house in Caldwell when the accident happened.
