“Operation Huggables”
The “Last Hug” is a story about a small child who watched as he said good-bye to his father, who is a member of the United Sates Armed Forces. As the small child stood alone on that dreary, rainy, and cold day, he wrapped his arms around himself as if trying to hold on to that “last hug” until his parent returned. Operation Huggables was created to collect new and gently-hugged teddy bears, dolls, or other stuffed animals of a “huggable size.” The goal is to provide as many huggables to military children of all ages across the state. Instead of the empty arms around themselves on departure day, kids will be able to hug and hold their huggables before, during, and after deployment.
William Dean and Cooper Smith are co-chairing an Operation Huggables stuffed animal drive. If you have any stuffed animals, there will be a box located at the Extension office in Cameron. If you need someone to pick up the stuffed animals, call William Dean (512) 446-2845 or Cooper Smith (254) 697-4049.

Scrapie Identification for Sheep and Goats
Scrapie is a fatal, degenerative brain disease of sheep and occasionally goats. Scrapie is similar to Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy in cattle, and Chronic Wasting Disorder in deer. Due to the risk of allowing infected animals without a method of trace-back could potentially spell disaster for the industry, so a means of identifying them is required.
For this reason, regulations exist to protect flocks and the industry. Scrapie tags are required to be in place when “animals are moved from their premises or commingled with sheep from another farm or ranch.” Sheep and goats that must be tagged before leaving the premises are: All sheep 18 months of age or older, All breeding sheep regardless of age, Sexually intact show or exhibition sheep and goats, and breeding goats and all goats 18 months or older, that have commingled with sheep.
Registered goats identified by tattoo if accompanied by registration papers and wethers or commercial goats used for fiber or meat production are exempt from tagging. Tags are available from the TAHC at 1-866-873-2824 or put in place by the breeder prior to sale. Be aware that if a sheep or goat will be exhibited at livestock shows, make sure that they are appropriately tagged prior to validation or exhibition. Failure to do so could result in not being able to show.
