TEMPLE WOMAN KILLED IN BUCKHOLTS ACCIDENT

(BUCKHOLTS)  A 22 year old Temple woman became Milam County’s 8th traffic fatality in just two months Saturday morning.  Barbara Conner Garcia, 22, died at Scott & White Hospital in Temple 5 ˝ hours after the accident.  According to investigating Trooper Craig Caden, Ms. Garcia was eastbound on US 190 just outside of Buckholts in a Chevy S10 Blazer when she crossed the center stripe striking a 97 Freight Tractor driven by Pedro Roberto Flores of El Campo.  Flores told authorities he steered left attempting to avoid the head-on collision, and Garcia’s Blazer struck the right front tandem axle, then traveled southwest across the east bound lane and rolled onto its side in the ditch on the south side of US 190.

The accident happened at 5:55 a.m. Saturday.  Both Garcia and Flores were wearing seat belts.  Both were taken to Scott & White Hospital in Temple.  Garcia was pronounced dead at 11:22 a.m.  Flores was treated and released.

In what has started out to be one of the deadliest years on Milam County roadways, Ms. Garcia is already the 8th traffic fatality since the first of the year, matching the total for the entire year last year.  In 2002 only 7 people were killed in Milam County accidents.  8 were killed in 2001; however 24 people were killed in Milam County accidents in 2000.
