CALLAWAY FOUNDATION ANNOUNCED (CAMERON) Superintendent Maxie Morgan said this could be the best thing that has ever happened to Cameron ISD. J. L. and Bonnelle Callaway’s friends and family have announced the Callaway Scholarship Foundation. This foundation was formed to provide C. H. Yoe High School graduates the opportunity for a post-secondary education. The scholarships will support university study and trade school education. The Foundation anticipates providing scholarships to numerous members of each graduating class beginning with the class of 2005 and extending into the foreseeable future. According to a press release, some scholarships will be grade point average based. Others will be based on committee-set criteria including excellence in extra-curricular activities such as Future Farmer’s of America, Band, Athletics, and University Interscholastic League. J. L. and Bonnelle Callaway created the Foundation in July of 2002, one year before each of their deaths. As life-long Cameron residents, the Callaways formed the Foundation to enhance the futures of C. H. Yoe High School graduates. The Foundation will allow many young people to live up to their potential and realize their dreams. J. L. Callaway worked for McLane Company in Temple for more than 55 years as one of its key senior executives. He was a driving force and inspirational leader during McLane’s early high-growth years. As a mentor and informal educator, Callaway was known for sage advice and leadership by example. During their more than 60 years of marriage, J. L. and Bonnelle were active members of the First Christian Church and supporters of many community, charitable activities. A committee of former C. H. Yoe High School graduates and current school administrators will administer the scholarship application process. Dr. Hope Warren Kock (cook), a Baylor University assistant professor and 1988 Yoe High graduate, chairs the committee. Superintendent Maxie Morgan, principal Clint McMahon, and counselor Robin Humphrey will be among those administering the scholarship process. All students and community members are invited to a meeting explaining the scholarship application process and more about the Foundation. The meeting will be held November 11tha t 5:30 p.m. in the new C. H. Yoe High School Performing Arts Center. |
