RENOVATION PLANED FOR HILLTOP (CAMERON) A major reconstruction and renovation plan has been announced for Hilltop Cefco on East First next to KMIL. Fikes Wholesale, Inc. recently acquired an additional 7.5 acres adjacent to the Hilltop, and plans are already in progress for a complete renovation of the site to include a new 5500 square foot convenience store containing not only the traditional convenience store items, but an expanded line of truck stop necessities and multiple foodservice offerings. The exterior of the store will feature a car/truck wash, all new expanded gasoline facilities and a large diesel-fueling island for the many trucks which frequent Hwy 36 and the Hilltop. The parking area will be enlarged to encompass approximately 250,000 square feet of paved drive and parking to accommodate the increased local and highway traffic. Out parcels will be available for expansion of retail businesses to include restaurants, shops and potentially a 60-unit hotel. Fikes Wholesale, Inc. has its roots firmly planted in Cameron having been founded by C. E. Fikes in 1952. The company has grown from a single store and a Texaco distributorship to a chain of 52 stores located throughout Central Texas. Fikes Wholesale continues to be owned and operated by the Fikes family, with James R. Fikes as President and CEO. Fikes, in a discussion regarding the growth of the company and future plans, said he believes that a company is only as strong as its foundation. Fikes said “our foundation is in Cameron, and it is only fitting that we strengthen our base by building a beautiful, modern store with all of the top-notch amenities that the community deserves.” Hilltop, a local landmark here in Cameron, has served the Cameron area and Highway 36 traffic since 1979. The store will continue to operate in a “business as usual” mode while the new store is being built adjacent to the existing location. Site preparation and construction should begin in the very near future. |
