TEMPLE MAN CHARGED IN AGGRAVATED SEXUAL ASSAULT CASE (CAMERON) Cameron Police have arrested and charged a Temple man in connection with the October 11, 2004 sexual assault of an elderly Cameron woman upon conclusion of a two month investigation. Delton Conroe Heugatter Jr. 37 of Temple and formerly of Cameron was arrested late Sunday evening by Cameron Police Lt. Terry Drummond and Sheriff's Investigator Greg Kouba and charged with the first degree felony offense of Aggravated Sexual Assault of an elderly person over 65 years of age. The two month investigation into the late evening attack on October 11, 2004 was aided by the Milam County Crime Stoppers program after ATM photos were released to the local media on December 6, 2004 seeking a possible identification of a person seen in the video. The images were captured by an ATM machine at the Buckholts State Bank-Cameron Branch just prior to the suspect entering the victim's home. Cameron Police had sought the help of the public through the Crime Stoppers program in publicizing the photos in hopes that someone would recognize the person in the video. A reward totaling $2,500.00 had been offered by the crime stoppers program after an additional $1,500 had been donated by friends and family members of the victim. Cameron Police, assisted by Texas Ranger Matt Lindemann and Sheriff's office investigators had followed several leads in the case which led to the recovery of evidence in the case which linked the suspect to the offense. After a Crime Stoppers tip was received on Friday, December 11, 2004, Lt. Drummond and Sheriff's Investigator Greg Kouba went to Temple around noon Sunday where the suspect was reported to be living. He was asked to come to Cameron for an interview. Huegatter admitted his actions in the offense and gave investigators a detailed confession. Heugatter is presently on parole for burglaries committed in Cameron in 1991 after serving 11 years in the penitentiary on a 20 year sentence. His parole expires in 2011. His extended stay in prison resulted from a failed escape attempt from the Pack Unit near Navasota. Heugatter was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Chip Dunsmoor on the charge and bond was set at $75,000. A parole revocation warrant will soon be issued in connection with the case. Cameron Lt. Terry Drummond was assisted in the investigation by the Texas Rangers, the Milam County Sheriff's Office and Milam County District Attorney Kerry Spears. The case will be forwarded to the Grand Jury for indictment after which time the reward will be paid. |
