(TAYLOR) The proposed recreation center for Taylor took a giant step backwards this week thanks to a lack of funding.
The
YMCA of Greater Williamson County notified the City of Taylor that they
cannot provide the $288,000 in pre-paid rent as requested. The City
Council in December asked the YMCA for the money to cover some of the
costs of the $3.6 million facility.
The original facility was
planned to be built on donated land next to the Taylor Regional Sports
Complex. The YMCA is now asking to meet with city officials to propose
building a smaller facility in a more central location in town.
According to YMCA officials, the agency felt that they might end up
paying more in hidden construction costs and other fees.
The
City has already spent $300,000 in engineering and architectural
pre-construction costs for the facility. The Council had voted in
November to spend unused funds for the proposed facility, but found bids
for the project came in well over their budget.
