(TEMPLE) The City of Belton is threatening eminent domain over a controversial bridge project.

Belton City Council this week approved a measure to use eminent domain by a 5-1 vote. The Council said they will only take that step if they cannot reach agreement with property owners. City officials said they must acquire 2 pieces of frontage property in order to build a 2-lane bridge on Toll Bridge Rd. Currently the 2 pieces are valued at less than $10,000 each. Belton and Texas Department of Transportation have an agreement to replace the bridge over the Lampasas River. TxDOT will pay about 90% of the cost and the City will cover purchasing rights of way. Construction is expected to begin by December.
