International Women’s Day

Earlier this week the world recognized International Women’s Day, a time set aside to celebrate the incredible contributions women make in our homes, our workplaces, our communities, and across society. It is a day to reflect on the leadership, dedication, and quiet strength women bring to every area of life. Women serve as leaders, educators, caregivers, business professionals, and mentors, shaping the lives of those around them through compassion, determination, and a deep commitment to the people and communities they serve.

My appreciation for the impact women have in our world began early in life. I was fortunate to grow up as the grandson of two remarkable women who served as strong matriarchs on both sides of our family. Both were working professionals at a time when it was far less common for women to hold prominent roles in the workplace. One served as a nurse, dedicating her career to caring for others and making a difference in the lives of patients and families. The other served as the Chief Financial Officer of our family’s oil and gas business, managing the financial side of a demanding industry with professionalism and skill.

They were both powerful examples to me of what women can accomplish—not only in their careers, but also within their families and communities. They demonstrated that leadership, strength, and wisdom are not defined by gender, but by character, work ethic, and a willingness to serve others. At a time when many women did not have the same opportunities to advance professionally, they stepped into important roles and carried them with dignity and excellence. Their influence helped shape my understanding of the important role women play in every part of society.

Today, that appreciation carries even deeper meaning as I reflect on the women who are closest to my heart. My wife, Melissa (aka, The Nurse), and our four daughters are daily reminders of the strength, character, and grace that women bring into our lives. Melissa’s work as a Nurse Practitioner serving the people of Milam County and the surrounding area reflects the same spirit of service I admired growing up. She works tirelessly to care for patients, often going above and beyond to make sure people receive the attention and treatment they need. At the same time, she remains the steady foundation of our family, offering support, wisdom, and encouragement that inspires me every single day.

Watching our daughters grow into strong, capable young women has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. Each of them carries their own unique talents, ambitions, and personalities, and seeing them develop into confident individuals with bright futures ahead is something that fills me with pride and gratitude.

International Women’s Day is not only about recognizing achievements across society, though those accomplishments are certainly worth celebrating. It is also about appreciating the women who shape our lives in personal and meaningful ways every day. The mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, teachers, coworkers, and friends who influence us through their example often leave the greatest and most lasting impact.

Today I celebrate Melissa, our daughters, and the countless women who strengthen our families, our businesses, and our communities through their hard work, leadership, compassion, and dedication. I am deeply grateful for the role they play in my life and for the positive influence women everywhere continue to have in building stronger communities and a brighter future for the next generation.
