Closing Out Child Abuse Awareness Month in Milam County

As April comes to a close, so too does Child Abuse Awareness Month. A time set aside to focus our attention on one of the most serious and sobering responsibilities we share as a community: protecting our children. While the calendar may turn, the work does not end here. In Milam County, we are fortunate to have dedicated organizations that stand on the front lines every day, advocating for, protecting, and supporting children who are among our most vulnerable.

The CASA of Milam County plays a vital role in our community by providing trained volunteer advocates who represent the best interests of children in the court system. These volunteers are appointed by judges to speak on behalf of children who have experienced abuse or neglect, ensuring their voices are heard in decisions that will shape their futures. CASA volunteers invest about 10 hours a month, care, and attention into each case, often becoming one of the few consistent and stable presences in a child’s life during uncertain times.

The CPS Board of Milam County works alongside Child Protective Services to provide resources and support that go beyond what state funding alone can cover. This board helps meet immediate and practical needs—clothing, school supplies, holiday assistance, and more—for children who have been removed from unsafe environments. Their work ensures that even in difficult circumstances, children are cared for with dignity and compassion.

The Child Advocacy Center of Central Texas serves as a cornerstone for coordinated response to child abuse cases. By bringing together law enforcement, medical professionals, counselors, and prosecutors in one child-friendly setting, the center minimizes trauma for children who must recount difficult experiences. Their team provides forensic interviews, therapy services, and ongoing support to help children begin the process of healing and recovery.

Finally, the Place of Hope offers critical services aimed at a healthy pregnancy and family stabilization. Through counseling, parenting classes, and support programs, they work to strengthen families and reduce the risk factors that can lead to unintended abuse or neglect. Their proactive approach helps address problems before they escalate, giving families the tools they need to create safe and nurturing environments for their unborn and newborn children.

As we reflect on the importance of these all-volunteer organizations, it is worth remembering a simple truth: our children are our future. Every leader in our community, whether in business, education, public service, or government was once a child with promise and potential. The strength of our communities today is a direct result of how previous generations cared for and invested in their young people.

The responsibility now rests with us. The children growing up in Milam County today will one day be the ones leading our schools, running our businesses, serving in public office, and shaping the direction of our county. Ensuring their safety, stability, and well-being is not just a moral obligation, it is an investment in the future of our entire community.

Child Abuse Awareness Month may be ending, but our commitment to protecting children must remain constant.
