October El Camino Real Day & Archeology Month 2025.
October 1 @ 8:00 am - October 31 @ 5:00 pm
El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail Association will partner with the Milam County Historical Commission to bring multiple historical events to Milam County – all to celebrate El Camino Real Day and Archeology Month in 2025.
Two archeology day events will be hosted by and in the Milam County History Museum and the Railroad Museum in Cameron, Texas. A third event will be held at Cedar Hill Nature Preserve in Gause, Texas. All events are free but you must register by emailing joycemconner@gmail.com if you wish to Walk the Ranchería Grande trail at Cedar Hill.
Archeology event days are Saturday, September 20 (during Cameron’s Steak, Stein, and Wine Festival) and Saturday, October 11. Bring the family to practice an archeological dig (10-11am and 1-2pm); learn about pioneer clothing, weapons, and tools; make an authentic clay pinch pot like Early People (11-noon and 2-3pm); and learn about early life in Milam County. See a collection of plants found along El Camino Real Trail and take home a booklet that tells how Early People and Pioneers might have used those plants. Learn and hear about El Camino Real Trail that crosses the entire State of Texas.
Also, save the date of Saturday, October 18, 10 am (the official El Camino Real Day) to visit the Ranchería Grande in Gause, Texas, for an unveiling of the dedication panels at the Cedar Hill Nature Preserve trailhead and at the village hilltop. (Walkers to the hilltop are limited to 35. You must register with joycemconner@gmail.com to be placed on the Walk list.) (Learn more about the property at 12374 FM 2095, Gause, TX, https://cedarhillnaturepreserve.com.)
Stay tuned for additional archeology/historical events planned for Milam County in 2025.
