The Texas Department of Transportation has invited the public to comment:

TODAY Anyone who wants to air their grievances or opinions about highway traffic to someone who will listen final chance to be heard and attend two meetings about the upcoming interstate extension.

The department will hold a virtual meeting, with in-person options, to share feedback on proposed improvements to Interstate 35 from south of Loop 121 in Belton to Loop 363/U.S. Highway 190/State Highway 36 in Temple, also known as Segment 1 of the Interstate 14 Extension Project.

Project staff will remain available to answer questions, and attendees may arrive and leave at their convenience as the events have no formal presentation scheduled.

The department stated it will post meeting materials online at txdot.gov by 5 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the txdot.gov website, the proposed seven-mile corridor extension’s purpose is to enhance operations and safety, reduce traffic congestion, improve roadway connectivity in the I-35 corridor and accommodate the future I-14 extension.

The department states the existing structure is inadequate to accommodate current and future traffic volumes, resulting in congestion, reduced mobility and unacceptable service levels on this stretch of highway. TxDOT also notes safety and operational issues arising from ramp and intersection configurations.

Other justifications for the extension include providing important connectivity with facilities throughout the area, including the future Temple Outer Loop, and being a part of the broader expansion of I-14, as the freeway-to-freeway connections do not meet current criteria and standards for an interstate facility.

The presentation also notes the current corridor crash rate exceeds the state average, with a concentration of crashes at I-14, U.S. 190, and Sixth Avenue interchanges in Belton.

Goals for the extension include extending I-14 from its current endpoint in Belton to Loop 363 in Temple via an alignment following I-35. Other goals include improving the I-14/U.S. 190/I-35 system interchanges; widening I-35; and improving overall safety, connectivity and mobility.
