(BARTLETT) (Closed thru Tuesday) Bartlett ISD will be closed Thursday Jan. 15 and Friday Jan. 16 due to increased flu and illness across the district. Officials within the district said the closure allows time for deep cleaning and recovery for students and staff.
Students will return Tuesday as Monday is a scheduled student and staff holiday.
The district said the decision was made out of an abundance of caution, especially for young children and those with pre-existing conditions.
Athletic schedule updates will be released when they are available.
(COPPERAS COVE) Funeral arrangements have been announced for fallen Copperas Cove Police officer Elijah Garretson. Funeral services with Full Police Honors will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2026 at the Cadence Bank Center’s Garth Arena, located at 301 West Loop 121 in Belton. The service has been entrusted to the care of the Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove.
The Copperas Cove Police Department says it is grateful for the continued support shown to Garretson’s family and to the department during this time as the officer’s life, service and sacrifice is honored.
Officer Garretson was fatally shot on January 10, 2026, and later died from his injuries while performing his duties. Authorities have confirmed that the suspect in this officer-involved shooting was identified as 26-year-old Jamison Wade Cavazos, of Lampasas.

(CAMERON) — A Cameron man was sentenced to 60 years in prison for the continuous sexual abuse of a young child. Previous reports stated the girl was 6 years old when she was abused.
In less than an hour, a Milam County jury found Damion Corona, 52, guilty of the first-degree felony of continuous sexual abuse of a young child on Friday, the Milam County District Attorney’s Office stated in a press release Monday afternoon.
The release stated hat after a five-day trial the jury returned the verdict to Judge John W. Youngblood of the 20th District Court in short order.
The guilty verdict carried a minimum sentence of 25 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice system and a maximum of a life sentence.
