BOND ISSUE ENDS IN TIE, WHAT NEXT?

(CAMERON) After counting more than 1100 ballots three times for accuracy, the Cameron ISD Bond election ended Saturday in a tie. School officials said after the original count, and two recounts, results were 551 votes for the bond issue, and 551 against.

After conferring with the Texas Education Agency, as well as bond attorneys, the issue of Saturday’s tie vote, is that it did not pass, therefore it was defeated.

The $7 million bond package would have financed a new high school at a 58% discount to local taxpayers. The package also included some $1 million in funds to renovate the old Ben Milam school. Had the bond issue passed, the package would have qualified the district for state Instructional Facility Allotment Funds that would finance 58% of the debt service, resulting in a local tax increase of no more than 10 cents per $100 valuation.

Proposition two, a tax cap proposal that was also required approval in order to move forward with the bond issue, passed 542-484.

In the school trustee election, Mike Zajicek and Curtis Hoyle were the top two candidates. Zajicek received 525 votes while Hoyle received 434. Johnny Winkler had 391, followed by Joe Smitherman with 267, Angel Vargas 167, and Linda Tergerson with 39.

(CAMERON) In the Cameron City Election, newcomer Connie Anderle defeated incumbent Beatrice Kestenbaum in the Ward 2 race, 171 votes to 53. And in the other contested race, At-Large councilman Ernest Moore defeated Ricky Sanders 256 to 73.
