Old Church Destroyed in Grass Fire

(DAVILLA)  The old First Baptist Church in Davilla was destroyed in a large grass fire Monday afternoon that threatened several other structures.  The church was not being used, and has been boarded up since the last of its members passed away years ago.  Firemen from Bartlett, Holland, Rogers and Buckholts battled the blaze for several hours.  Cameron Firemen were also called but were cancelled while en route.  Scott & White EMS out of Cameron was called to the scene when it was reported that a fireman had been overcome with smoke, but that report was unfounded.

Milam County remains under a burn ban until further notice because of the extreme dry conditions.  Burning of household garbage is allowed in barrels or burning pits only.

Firemen from four area departments work to contain Monday's large grass fire.
Several acres were scorched by the fire as firemen were hampered by winds and dry conditions.
Firemen surrounded the old Davilla School that was also threatened by the fire. (Below)  The fire also threatened several homes in the Davilla area.
