School Board Ponders Bond Issue

(CAMERON)  The Cameron School Board met with architect Jim Booher last night and discussed 9 projects to upgrade the Yoe High School campus. Combined, project costs are estimated at between $5.8 and $6 million.

The renovation of Yoe High School, commonly known now as "Yoe Main", would be the dominant project at an estimated cost of $2.69 million. Included would be a complete wall to wall, and floor to ceiling renovation of the school, the addition of a 4-stop elevator, New heating and air conditioning, windows, electrical,  and the restoration of the auditorium with seating for some 350 to 400.

Other projects discussed last night included:

Renovations to the old Ben Milam School, developing a home economics and a science wing. And converting the cafeteria and stage and office areas into a band hall complex. Renovations would include new heating and air conditioning, new electrical, new windows, new flooring, ceilings and lighting. Estimated cost, $1,155,000.

A new 7,000 square foot library to be constructed to the west wing of the old Ben Milam school. Estimated cost, $892,000.

Covered walkways connecting Yoe Main to Yoe Annex and the old Ben Milam School. Estimated cost, $112,000.

Renovations to Ada Henderson (Yoe Annex) to include lowering the ceilings, adding heating and air conditioning, and painting. Estimated cost, $624,000.

Adding Air conditioning to the old gymnasium, and renovations to downstairs classrooms. Estimated cost, $175,000.

Constructing 3 new tennis courts to the east of the present courts. Estimated cost, $110,700.

Converting the existing tennis courts into a parking lot. Estimated cost, $12,000.

And developing the current band hall and home economics sight into a parking lot. (Excluding the removal of the buildings) Estimated cost, $80,000.

The district could qualify for up to two-thirds of the cost of the projects through state instructional facilities allotment funds. If a bond issue is passed for the total amount, with the state funds anticipated, the district’s portion of the cost would require a 7 cent increase in property taxes. Trustees have stated that no bonds would be issued without the IFA funds from the state.

The board will consider calling for a bond election during their next regular meeting, which is set for Monday, March 5th.
