Courthouse Restoration on Schedule

(CAMERON)  Restoration of the Milam County Courthouse is on schedule for a June completion.  Dedication ceremonies are scheduled for Independence Day, July 4th, with tours and ceremonies.  The restoration project is being funded by a Texas Historical Commission grant of $2.9 million and matching local funds of almost $1 million.

The District Courtroom is the focal point of the courthouse.  (Above)  The courtroom spanned the entire length width of the courthouse, from north to south.  The view above is from the Judge's Bench of the District Courtroom facing  north.  The restoration revealed from wall shadows of pre existing structures,  that the rear of the courtroom was tiered.  The raised floor area will be used as a law library.

(Above and below)  The restoration also revealed what is believed to be the original color scheme of the District Courtroom.

The basement is housing most of the air conditioning and electrical equipment for courthouse.
The original ceiling design in the Commissioners Courtroom on the first floor. The Stairway railing has been replicated on the east side staircase.

The outside will take on a different look.  (Above)  The grounds are being prepared for the "Walk of History" sidewalk, composed of stones purchased by the public as a Preserve Our Past Committee fundraiser.  (Below left)  workers continue the outside restoration.  (Below right) County Judge Frank Summers inspects the new handicap ramp located on the west side of the courthouse.
