One Person Killed, Another Seriously Injured in Hwy 36 Accident

(CAMERON)  A Temple teenager was killed Saturday when her car collided head on with a Chevrolet Tahoe 4 miles east of Cameron on Highway 36.  Pronounced dead at the scene by JP Chip Dunsmoor was 18 year old Crystal LeighAnn Dragoo.  Miss Dragoo was killed when her small car crossed the center stripe while westbound, and struck the Tahoe driven by Susan Dunn, 47 of Belton.  Ms. Dunn was transported by Medivac to Scott & White Hospital in Temple where she is listed in serious condition.  It took Volunteer Firemen some 20 minutes to free Ms. Dunn from the vehicle using the Jaws-of-Life.  3 passengers, all members of a youth baseball program from the Temple/Belton area, suffered only minor injuries, and were treated at the scene.

According to investigating Trooper Ernest Del Bosque, the accident happened as the Tahoe was southbound on Hwy 36, and the small car was north bound.  The Tahoe was traveling with a group of three vehicles carrying the baseball team to participate in a tournament in Brenham.

The accident happened around 8:30 a.m. Saturday.  Two Cameron Scott & White EMS units responded, along the Cameron Volunteer Fire Department, Milam County Sheriff's Department and investigating Trooper Ernest Del Bosque.

Miss Dragoo attended Temple High School where she was cheerleader, a member of the girls track team, and was mascot for Temple High School and Jr. High School.  She also attended Sealy High School her Junior year  and part of her Senior year where she was a cheerleader and a member of the Cross Country Team.   She was also employed at The Mansion in Salado.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple.

Saturday's fatality is the Fifth on Milam County roadways for 2001, and the second this month.  A Robertson County man was killed in an accident on April 5th near Gause.  (see story)  In addition, a Cameron man died at Scott & White Hospital in Temple following a wreck on FM 485 in Maysfield earlier this week.  However, Doctors are listing that death as accidental and not a traffic fatality, ruling that John A. Smith, Jr.,  died of a heart attack while in the hospital.  (see story)

Other Members of the Baseball Program awaited anxiously, and at times knelt and prayed, while emergency crews worked to free Ms. Dunn from her Tahoe.

Firemen use the Jaws of Life to Free Ms. Dunn from her vehicle.

The initial impact was front-left panel to front-left panel causing extensive damage to the driver's side of both vehicles.

Scott & White Paramedics prepare Ms. Dunn for a Medivac Transport to Scott & White Hospital.
