Solar Arrow Escorted/Welcomed Home

(CAMERON)  After 11 days, and more than a two-thousand mile roundtrip, the C. H. Yoe High School Solar Arrow and it's team of High School students were welcomed home today.  The car was escorted into Cameron (above) by the Sheriff's Department and the Cameron Police Department.

The Team placed 5th overall in the 2001 Winston Solar Challenge, a competition among solar powered vehicles to see who could log the most solar miles between Round Rock, Texas and Columbus, Indiana.  After taking a 130 mile penalty on day one, (click here for story) the Solar Arrow rebounded to log a cumulative mileage total of 207, good enough to place 5th overall and ahead of last year's Solar Challenge Champions.

The idea of building a solar powered car was birthed in Dr. Fabor's advanced physics class more than a year ago.  Through fund raisers and sponsorships, the Solar Arrow Team raised the needed funds to construct the vehicle and enter the race.

In all 7 teams competed in the Challenge.  The Solar Arrow from Yoe High was one of only two teams from Texas in this year's competition.  For race results, pictures and videos of race activities, log on to www.winstonsolar.org.

Only one mishap was dealt with on the 11 day trip.  Dr. Fabor suffered a broken bone in his foot on race day 4 when the Solar Arrow rolled over his foot while approaching the starting line in Pittsburgh, Kansas.  Following the day's race, Fabor visited the emergency room for treatment.  He remains on crutches.
