Ground Breaks for New City Hall

(CAMERON)  Ground breaking ceremonies were held today for Cameron's new City Hall, a project funded by the McLane Family.  Drayton McLane (pictured left) was on hand with city officials and architect Charles Volter to participate in the ground breaking.  McLane announced in April (see story) that his family wanted to fund the reconstruction of the 1891 Green Building at First and Houston in downtown Cameron and donate the building to the city of Cameron for a new City Hall.  The project, estimated at the time to cost $650,000 has jumped to an estimated $900,000.  John Egger of EBCO told KMIL News the addition of a third floor for future expansion resulted in most of the cost increase.

Construction began immediately following today's ceremony with ground preparation.  Egger said the targeted finish date is the end of February, 2002.

Participating in the ground breaking today were (L-R) Mayor James Lafferty, Councilmen Cliff Cryer and Ernest Moore, Drayton McLane, Councilwoman Connie Anderle, City Administrator Janet Sheguit, Council members Alvin Roberts, Dan Green, Jr. and Rose Lee Mondrik, architect Charles Volter, and John Egger of EBCO.
Around 100 community members attended today's ceremony.
