Dewberry Festival Returns, Replaces March Fest
(Cameron)
The Cameron Dewberry Festival will be held Saturday, April 28th in
downtown Cameron. The entertainment and heritage festival will
feature many performers as patrons enjoy a day of arts & crafts and
a variety of food booths. A parade that showcases the days events begins
at 9:00 a.m. followed by a barbecue cook-off, carnival, live
entertainment, and of course our dewberries!
Milam County became the Dewberry Capital of Texas when the late Gene Smitherman conceived the idea to capitalize on the abundant crops here in the County. A favorite food of his Breakfast Club co-host, Silas once auctioned off for charity, a gallon of dewberries that raised over $1700. Smitherman contacted the late State Representative Dan Kubiak with the idea. Kubiak drafted and submitted to the House, Resolution 11 which was passed on March 30, 1995 during the 74th Legislative session. The Resolution designates Milam County as the Dewberry Capitol of Texas. (H.R. 11) The First Dewberry Festival was held in 1999 (See story) hosted by KMIL and held at Cameron's City Park. This year, the Dewberry Festival has been combined with the Chamber sponsored March Fest, and will be held annually on the last Saturday in April. |
