Milam's 2001 Fatality Count rises on New Ruling.

(CAMERON)  Milam County's traffic death toll for 2001 rose to 6 when a ruling in the cause of death of a Cameron man changed.  John A. Smith, Jr., 87, died April 18th at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, one day after his pickup left Farm Road 485 and plunged into a creek near Maysfield. (see story)

According to State Trooper Jimmy Morgan, the initial ruling from JP G. W. Ivey of Bell County was that Smith died from a heart attack while in the hospital.  However, in a report released last week, the heart attack was third on the list in the causes of death.  First on the list was head trauma as a result of the accident.  Because of the ruling, Morgan said the accident is now considered a traffic fatality, resulting in the 6th death on Milam County roads this year.
