DOWNTOWN STEPS BACK IN TIME FOR COURTHOUSE DEDICATION (CAMERON) Dressed in late 1800 attire, hundreds of Milam County elected officials, employees, and citizens adorned the downtown square for the re-dedication of the Milam County Courthouse. On the 111th birthday of the laying of the courthouse cornerstone, the county celebrated a $3.9 million restoration project that has restored the courthouse to its late 1800’s décor, with added modern conveniences such as bathrooms, electricity, an elevator, and air conditioning. Ribbon cutting at each of the 4 entrances to the courthouse was held simultaneously by Milam County Commissioners as the clock struck 3. The courthouse was then open for tours. The re-dedication ceremony began at 6 p.m. Among those on the program were Congressman Chet Edwards, State Senator Steve Ogden, Stan Graves of the Texas Historical Commission, and District Judge Ed Magre who presented the "Spirit of Milam Past". Hundreds attended the hour long program on the west steps of the courthouse. The celebration then moved to Ledbetter Park where thousands attended a fireworks display sponsored by Citizens National Bank. |
