WACO MAN DROWNS IN LITTLE RIVER (BUCKHOLTS) A Waco man drowned Thursday morning in the Little River on FM 1915, five miles south of Buckholts. The Milam County Sheriff's Office received a report at 11:33 am that a man had drowned. Upon arrival of deputies and Sheriff West, it was learned that a crew of men had been working under the bridge and in the river, cleaning up a log jam. The crew, working for Texas Tree Service, was sub-contracted by the Texas Department of Transportation to clear out the large logjam that had formed in the river. The six man crew had been in the water physically removing logs from the blockage when an 18 year old employee, Jose Carlos Tovar Terrazas, was swept away by the strong Little River currents. Sheriff West stated that two of the men jumped in the water in an attempt to rescue Terrazas but where unable to due to the strong currents. They threw a rope to Terrazas but he was unable to retrieve it before he drowned. According to Sheriff West, Terrazas' body was recovered by Cameron Fire Department after dragging operations began. The Cameron Volunteer Fire Department and the Buckholts Volunteer Fire Department and Game Wardens from Milam and Bell Counties assisted the Sheriff's Office with the recovery. An inquest was conducted by Justice of the Peace O.C. "Chip" Dunsmoor. Terrazas' name was withheld for several days pending notification of his family in Mexico. |
