FIRST WINTER BLAST CRIPPLES CENTRAL TEXAS

(CAMERON)  Roads became treacherous Wednesday afternoon and continued thru Thursday morning as Central Texas was blanketed with ice following the first winter storm of the season.   Donnie Reinders of the Texas Department of Transportation Milam County office told KMIL News that the roads, in his words, were the worst he has ever seen them.  Freezing mist continued to fall here in the Cameron area until around 5 a.m. Thursday and roads were 100% ice covered.  The roads were not quiet as bad in the Rockdale area where Reinders said ice covered about 75% of the roads, and in the Thorndale area around 50%.  But here in the Cameron area, the roads were 100% ice covered from shoulder to shoulder.

Highway department crews were out all night sanding bridges and overpasses here in the county.

Ice blanketed Central Texas in the seasons first winter storm.

This was a common sight around Milam County Thursday morning.  Law agencies investigated numerous accidents, mainly when vehicles slid off roadways.

Law enforcement officers and emergency crews have worked numerous accidents here in the county as a result of the weathert.  Most of the accidents were minor, however a major accident occurred Wednesday afternoon just after 5 p.m. on the Little River Bridge just east of Cameron.  (see story)

At least 3 vehicles were involved and numerous injuries were reported.  The accident shut down traffic in both directions for more than an hour as the accident scene was cleared.   Cameron Fire rescue and EMS responded along with Cameron Police, Milam County Sheriffs Office and the Texas Highway Patrol.

Schools in the area cancelled classes Thursday, government offices and businesses delayed openings because of the dangerous roadways.

Roads around Cameron were covered with a sheet of ice causing motorists slip and slide.
